News and Society Those who want to make a career in journalism should consider News and Society. This class covers topics of special interest for media experts, journalists, educators, and government officials. News and Society look at the different ways we tell stories and look at how stories are written. When newspapers were first published, newspapers had a strict set of rules that had to be followed. Today, the rules have changed and we see this class as an opportunity to learn more about what makes a story interesting and why. In this class, students will examine how stories are written, written by journalists, used in different disciplines, and distributed through many media. There are many opportunities to analyze different stories and how they are published, including television, newspaper, magazines, radio, and the Internet. News and Society are a requirement for any student who wishes to major in journalism. However, News and Society may be taken after other journalism courses. For those with a general interest in the news, this course can also help you make a career path in journalism. Students will look at the history of the paper, how it is distributed, how editors and reporters decide on stories, and the many influences that shape the news. Students will learn about what stories to influence the public and what types of stories they are most interested in. Students will learn about the proper way to write a story, especially when writing for the audience. Teachers will teach how to identify the right part of the audience and how to make sure your story is written to appeal to the reader. Students will use their knowledge of writing and drawing from other forms of media to identify the audience, relate to the reader, and make the story engaging. Students will learn how to create a story about any topic, including science, arts, entertainment, politics, religion, and crime. Topics covered by this class include a wide range of subjects. Students will examine some of the popular media and how it applies to a particular field. This course is highly recommended for those who wish to gain a wider understanding of the industry and career growth. It includes discussions of publishing of the newspaper, analyzing stories in the newspaper, their distribution, the different kinds of magazines, the use of media by journalists, and other topics. The focus of this class is on the written word, but there is a good understanding of all media that will prepare students for careers in communications, journalism, advertising, and other professions. Students will have to know and understand facts about news, and learn how to analyze and write articles about news and events. They will also be taught to read the news and other media in order to understand their impact on society. Students will learn to use news and other media in order to influence opinion and bring about change. Students will be required to participate in study groups throughout the semester. These study groups will include topics that include the role of the newspaper, the value of the newspaper, and how the news can affect the government and world in general. Topics for discussion include, the importance of the newspaper in society, its place in society, and the role of the newspaper in the news. Some of the most interesting topics of discussion in these classes utilize the internet as well. Classes in this course consider a variety of popular media, including the three major media: television, print, and the Internet. Students will study the way the media portrays individuals, events, and society as a whole. Students will examine the characteristics of media and how it relates to society. The class takes into account the best ways to communicate information to audiences with specific media. News and Society explore how we get our news, how we receive it, and how we interpret it, and how we share and discuss it.
